Top-seeded Serena Williams advanced to the semifinals of the Bank of the West Classic with little trouble Friday, beating Patty Schnyder 6-3, 6-1. Schnyder had won three of five meetings against Williams, including a match in Zurich last year when Williams retired after losing the first nine games. James Blake beat unseeded Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships on Friday, moving one step closer to his second title in three years. Venus, Lindsay withdraw from SoCal tournament
Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport withdrew Friday from next week's East West Bank Classic, with both citing right knee injuries. Williams hasn't played a tournament since defeating her younger sister Serena to win her fifth Wimbledon title earlier this month. "I have been receiving treatment for tendinitis in my right knee over the last several days and my medical advisers have encouraged me to allow myself an additional week to completely recover," she said in a statement.

Defending champ Moya upset in Croatia quarters
Italy's Fabio Fognini upset five-time defending champion Carlos Moya 6-4, 6-3 in the Croatia Open quarterfinals on Friday. Moya was trying to reach his ninth consecutive semifinal in Umag. He'd also won both previous matches against Fognini, both on clay two years ago, but trailed all the way this time. Fognini was broken when serving for the match at 5-2, but the Italian then broke Moya for a sixth time to end the match. Moya's record in Umag fell to 45-9.
